京都のBALというファッションビルの一隅で美しいマネキンを見つけた。中央の煉瓦色の洋服を身につけたタイトな人形だ。およそ人間離れしたスタイルの良さだが、表情に翳りがあり、悲しそうだった。彼女を主役にして絵の中に立たせたいと思い、そのとき夢中になって見ていたピエロ・デラ・フランチェスカの画集から、青い空に浮かぶ雲の形を借用して描いた。剥落したような壁はピエロのフレスコ画の影響からきている。
I found a beautiful mannequin in a corner of a fashion building called BAL in Kyoto. It is a tight doll wearing brick-coloured clothes in the centre. She had an almost inhuman style, but her face was shadowed and she looked sad. I wanted to make her the main character in the painting, so I borrowed the shape of a cloud in a blue sky from an art book by Piero della Francesca, which I was looking at with fascination at the time. The peeling-looking walls came from the influence of Piero’s frescoes.
