The lotus became an important motif for me as soon as I encountered it because of its freshness and radiance, and I continue to paint it from time to time. In my hometown, the Karasuma Peninsula on Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, there was a large colony of lotuses, which I have often visited since the summer of 2000. When the lotus blooms on the water’s edge and white birds swoop down, I felt as if I could meet my mother who had died the previous year.
